Introduction to the Old Testament

Introduction

This is a down to earth course for those new to the study of Scripture. It allows for group study at a pace you can manage.

Course Objectives

The course aims to help participants;

appreciate the nature of biblical literature

Catechetical Studies at the National Centre for Religious Studies New Zealand gain knowledge and understanding of; the composition of the Bible,

background to the Old Testament books, and the major sub-division e.g. The Law, Prophets, Wisdom

gain an understanding of literary form, and methods of exegesis and analysis

apply this knowledge and understanding to daily life

Assessment

A postal tutor comments on written exercises for those doing the course for credit.

Delivery Method

A Study Guide for each theme and a textbook are posted to each participant and a set of tapes containing input for each meeting are posted to the group facilitator.

The group decides on the interval between meetings – 1 month, 6 weeks, 2 months.

Sacred Judean History – geographical and historical background

Covenant and traditions of the Northern Kingdom

The Prophets before the Exile

The Prophets during the Exile

The Wisdom writers

The Psalmists

Later Apocalyptic and Epic literature

Readings

The basic textbook is How to Read The Old Testament by Etienne Charpentier.
