Introduction to the New Testament

“To be ignorant of the Scriptures is to be ignorant of Christ”. St. Jerome

Introduction

This is a down to earth course for those new to the study of Scripture. It allows for group study at a pace you can manage.

Course Objectives

The course aims to help participants

recognise the links between the Old and New Testaments

examine the literary forms of the New Testament writings

appreciate the uniqueness of each Gospel and the consistencies among them

see the Gospel as a Living Word

apply this knowledge and understanding to daily life

Assessment

A postal tutor comments on written exercises for those doing the course for credit.

Delivery Method

A Study Guide for each theme and a textbook are posted to each participant and a set of tapes containing input for each meeting are posted to the group facilitator.

The group decides on the interval between meetings – 1 month, 6 weeks, 2 months

The Resurrection of Jesus

Paul and his letters

Mark: the Gospel of ‘before Easter’

Matthew: the Gospel of the Kingdom

Luke: the Gospel of God’s tenderness

John: the spiritual Gospel

Revelation: the Book and the Process

Readings

The basic textbook is How to Read The New Testament by Etienne Charpentier.
