| Catechetical Studies The 1988 Guidelines from the Catholic Congregation for Sacred Education, entitled “The Religious Dimension of Education in a Catholic School”, state that ‘the religion teacher is the key, the vital component, if the educational goals of the school are to be achieved. - Every thing possible must be done to ensure that Catholic Schools have adequately trained religion teachers; it is a vital necessity and a legitimate expectation’ (N 96, 97). In New Zealand while we have a Catholic School system, we do not have a Catholic Teacher Education Institution. The education reforms of the 1990’s mean that Colleges of Education are no longer the sole providers of teacher education. Competition among providers, combined with recent and predicted growth rates in Catholic schools, raised a number of challenges. Thus there was a need for a national curriculum that would serve the needs of the six dioceses for ensuring a supply of teachers qualified in Religious Education. NCRS, working with the Catechetical co-ordinators from the dioceses, developed such a Curriculum Statement in 2000. It is now being delivered in each diocese Aims To assist students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to be able to teach the approved national Religious Education Programmes. To assist those students who believe themselves called to the ministry of teaching, so as to prepare themselves for the part they will play in the mission of the Church through employment in a Catholic school. To provide opportunities for professional development, personal formation and spiritual growth. To provide a course of 100 hours, recognised by a national qualification.
The content of the course is organised into three major areas of study: Scripture Theology Religious Education
